Design, Think, Learn:
The Vision

Design and technology plays a crucial role in education, as it equips students with the necessary skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. In today's workplaces, where innovation and creativity are highly valued, design and technology activities enable students to think critically, solve problems, and express their ideas effectively.

The KS1 and KS2 curriculum aims state that 'High-quality design and technology education makes an
essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.' We aim to support schools and higher education establishments to make this aim a reality through three key intents.

Designing

Teaching pupils about the design process in the context of education is vital towards the development of learning.  We encourage and advocate pupils producing a range of solutions not identical outcomes. By also promoting sustainability agendas we not only support school budgets and encourage students to consider a sustainable future.

Thinking

Research suggests that both creative and critical thinking skills are evident within D&T activities (Brown, 2023; Nicholl, 2017; Wei, 2020), . These activities empower students to become independent thinkers, problem solvers, and lifelong learners. By encouraging these thinking skills, we can equip students with the tools to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Learning

Learning in the context of the design and technology national curriculum can be seen as an acquisition of knowledge and skills that will prepare pupils for their future. Our activities meet these standards but consider other attributes that are harder to assess and measure such as creative and critical thinking.
